Nantan - Iron, IAB-MG

Nantan is a well-known Iron meteorite from Guangxi, China, officially classified as Iron, IAB-MG. Historical records suggest that a fall may have been witnessed in 1516, although the meteorite fragments were not recovered until 1958 near Nantan County. Around 9.5 tonnes of material have been recorded, scattered across a broad strewn field, making Nantan one of the more substantial and recognisable Chinese Iron meteorites.

Nantan specimens are composed primarily of iron-nickel metal and often show strong terrestrial weathering from their long time in the ground before recovery. Natural pieces may display dark, oxidised, sculpted, or irregular surfaces, while prepared material can reveal metallic structure when cut, polished, and etched. Its IAB-MG classification places it within the Main Group of IAB Irons, a group known for complex formation histories involving metallic material, impact processing, and early asteroid evolution.

Studying Nantan provides insight into Iron meteorite weathering, metallic asteroid material, and the preservation of large strewn fields over long timescales. Its possible historic fall, Chinese provenance, substantial recovered mass, and recognised classification make it especially appealing for collectors of Iron meteorites and historic finds. Each specimen represents ancient asteroid metal preserved in metallic form for over 4.5 billion years.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0757/0518/8678/collections/Collection_Place_Holder_c5f49463-f993-4d75-8ba1-8b65af32a413.jpg?v=1780666389
