Peekskill - H6 Ordinary Chondrite

Peekskill is one of the most famous witnessed Meteorite falls of the modern era, landing in Peekskill, New York, USA, on 9 October 1992. The fireball was seen across several eastern US states and was recorded on multiple video cameras, making it one of the best-documented meteorite falls before the age of widespread dashcam footage. The meteorite became especially famous because the main mass struck a parked 1980 Chevrolet Malibu, giving Peekskill a strong place in both scientific and popular meteorite history. The Meteoritical Bulletin records Peekskill as an H6 Ordinary Chondrite fall from New York.

Peekskill is classified as an H6 Ordinary Chondrite, meaning it contains relatively high iron compared with L and LL Chondrites and has experienced a high degree of thermal metamorphism on its parent asteroid. A main stone of around 12.37 kg and about 200 g of fragments were recovered, with descriptions noting light centimetre-sized H6 clasts in a darker H6 matrix. As a type 6 Chondrite, its original chondrules are generally subdued, while the overall texture reflects extensive recrystallisation before the meteorite reached Earth.

Studying Peekskill provides valuable insight into Ordinary Chondrite parent bodies, atmospheric entry, and the recovery of well-documented meteorite falls. Its video-recorded descent, precise impact location, car-strike provenance, and recognised classification make it especially desirable for collectors of witnessed falls, hammer meteorites, and historic American meteorites. Each specimen represents ancient asteroid material connected to one of the most memorable meteorite events of the 20th century.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0757/0518/8678/collections/Collection_Place_Holder_a6f9656f-9538-47b1-b903-b5f66764328e.jpg?v=1780517168
