Mvskoke Merkv - L6 Chondrite
Mvskoke Merkv is a recent witnessed L6 Ordinary Chondrite fall from Muskogee County, Oklahoma, USA. The fall occurred on 20 January 2023, when a fireball was seen over the region before stones were recovered from land within the Muscogee Nation Reservation. The name Mvskoke Merkv means ‘Muscogee Blessing’ in the Muscogee language, reflecting the cultural context of the fall and its connection to the land where it was recovered. It is officially recorded by the Meteoritical Bulletin as an L6 Ordinary Chondrite fall from Oklahoma.
Mvskoke Merkv specimens typically show the compact, thermally altered texture of an L6 Ordinary Chondrite. Interiors can display subdued chondrules, scattered metal grains, and a grey to brown stony matrix, while some pieces retain dark fusion crust from atmospheric entry. As an L Chondrite, it has lower metallic iron than H Chondrites, while the type 6 classification indicates extensive recrystallisation on its parent asteroid.
Studying Mvskoke Merkv provides insight into Ordinary Chondrite parent bodies, thermal metamorphism, and the recovery of fresh material from a modern witnessed fall. For collectors, it offers a rare combination of recent fall provenance, American origin, official classification, and meaningful cultural naming. Each specimen represents ancient asteroid material connected to a clearly recorded event in 2023.
