Amgala 001 - Martian Shergottite (Olivine-Phyric)

Amgala 001 is a Martian Shergottite found near Meharrize in Saguia el Hamra, Western Sahara, with multiple stones recovered in December 2022. As a Shergottite, it represents igneous material from Mars, formed through volcanic processes before being launched from the planet by a powerful impact event. With a reported total known weight of around 34.67 kg, Amgala 001 is a significant modern Martian meteorite find and an important addition to available Mars material.

Amgala 001 specimens typically show a weathered brown exterior, while fresh interiors can appear greenish grey with darker olivine phenocrysts. Its mineralogy includes olivine, clinopyroxene, maskelynite, and accessory phases consistent with Martian Shergottites. Shock veins and secondary veinlets have also been noted, reflecting both the intense shock event that ejected the material from Mars and later alteration after its arrival on Earth.

Studying Amgala 001 provides valuable insight into Martian volcanism, impact launch processes, and the mineral chemistry of the Martian crust. For collectors, it offers a recognised and relatively recent Martian meteorite with strong planetary significance and distinctive visual character. Each specimen represents genuine material from Mars, formed by volcanic activity on another planet and delivered to Earth after a journey through space.
