Dalgety Downs - L4 Ordinary Chondrite

Dalgety Downs is a well-known L4 Ordinary Chondrite found in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia in 1941. The original recovery consisted of a large mass broken into many fragments, with later finds increasing the known material. As an L Chondrite, Dalgety Downs has lower metallic iron than H Chondrites, while its type 4 classification indicates moderate thermal metamorphism that has preserved many original Chondritic features. The Meteoritical Bulletin records Dalgety Downs as an approved Western Australian meteorite with several historic catalogue synonyms.

 

Dalgety Downs specimens typically show a light grey to brown interior with visible chondrules and scattered metal grains. Many pieces have weathered exteriors from long exposure in the Australian environment, while cut sections reveal the internal texture more clearly. Its L4 classification makes it especially interesting because chondrules remain easier to observe than in more highly metamorphosed L5 or L6 material, giving specimens strong educational and display value.

 

Studying Dalgety Downs provides insight into Ordinary Chondrite parent bodies, thermal alteration, and the preservation of early solar system textures. It is also one of the most substantial L4 meteorites on record, with large amounts represented in major collections. For collectors, Dalgety Downs offers a classic Australian Chondrite with recognised provenance, visible chondrules, and a strong place in meteorite collecting history.
