How many different meteorites have been officially identified and classified?

As of the latest data, over 84,000 different meteorites have been officially identified and classified. This number is continually updated as new discoveries are made and existing specimens are re-evaluated.

Meteorites are classified based on their composition and structure, with major categories including stony meteorites (chondrites and achondrites), iron meteorites, and stony-iron meteorites. Each category provides valuable insights into the early solar system and planetary formation processes.

The Meteoritical Society, a professional organization dedicated to the study of meteorites and planetary science, maintains a comprehensive database (The Meteoritical Bulletin, or 'MetBul') that is frequently referenced by researchers and institutions worldwide. This database is an essential resource for scientists aiming to understand the complexities of meteoritic materials and their origins.

Because of the volume and variation of questions that we have needed to cover whilst compiling our FAQs, we have enlisted the help of GPTs that we have created and trained using a host of academic and specialist resources since early 2024.
