NWA 5000 - Lunar Feldspathic Breccia

NWA 5000 is a famous Lunar Feldspathic Breccia found in southern Morocco in July 2007. It was recovered as a single large cuboidal stone weighing 11.528 kg, and at the time of its discovery it was one of the largest known Lunar meteorites. As a Lunar meteorite, NWA 5000 represents genuine Moon rock ejected from the Lunar surface by a powerful impact event before travelling through space and eventually reaching Earth. Its Feldspathic Breccia classification links it to the Moon’s ancient highland crust.

NWA 5000 is visually distinctive, with a brecciated texture containing pale feldspathic material, grey matrix, and darker impact-melt components. Research describes it as a feldspathic near-monolithologic breccia composed predominantly of metal-bearing leucogabbroic to gabbroic material. Its texture records a complex history of Lunar crust formation, impact brecciation, shock, and reassembly before eventual ejection from the Moon.

Studying NWA 5000 provides valuable insight into the Lunar Highlands, including feldspathic crustal material, gabbroic components, and impact processing on the Moon. Its large original mass, recognised classification, and strong visual character make it especially desirable for Lunar meteorite collectors. Each specimen represents genuine Moon rock from one of the most important and widely recognised Lunar meteorite finds.
