Saffordite

Saffordite is a rare natural glass found near Safford, Arizona, USA. It is often described in the collector market as a ‘pseudo-tektite’ or ‘Arizona Tektite’, although it is generally understood as a terrestrial volcanic glass rather than a confirmed impact-formed Tektite. This distinction is important, as Saffordite is best presented as an unusual natural glass with a tektite-like appearance, rather than a meteorite or proven impactite.

 

Saffordite specimens are typically small, rounded, and naturally tumbled, with colours ranging from smoky brown to lavender, purple-grey, or subtly translucent tones depending on thickness and lighting. Many pieces show smooth surfaces, light pitting, and a soft glassy lustre, giving them a distinctive appearance compared with darker Obsidian or classic black Tektites. Their limited Arizona occurrence and unusual colour have contributed to their popularity among collectors of natural glass and unusual geological materials.

 

Studying and collecting Saffordite helps illustrate the diversity of natural terrestrial glasses and the importance of distinguishing volcanic glass from true Tektites and Impactites.
