Wagon Mound is an L6 Ordinary Chondrite found in Mora County, New Mexico, USA, in the spring of 1932. A single 87.5 kg stone was discovered by Donald Wiggins while planting a field, and the meteorite remained with his family for 67 years before being sold in 1999. Its classification as an L6 Chondrite places it within the low iron Ordinary Chondrites, with a high degree of thermal metamorphism on its parent asteroid.
Specimens of Wagon Mound typically show a compact, recrystallised Chondrite texture, with subdued chondrules and scattered metal grains. The type 6 classification indicates extensive heating, meaning many original features have been altered while the overall Chondritic structure remains recognisable. Reported data includes shock stage S2 and weathering grade W2, consistent with a moderately shocked and weathered meteorite find.
For collectors, Wagon Mound offers a well-documented American meteorite with strong provenance and a distinctive recovery history. Its New Mexico origin, single-stone recovery, and long period in private family ownership give it additional historical interest beyond its classification. Each specimen represents ancient asteroid material formed over 4.5 billion years ago, preserved as part of a recognised USA meteorite find.
How the scales and gridlines work.
Each small square is 1x1mm, and each bold-lined square is 10x10mm, or 1cm² (1 square centimetre).
Imperial measurements.
1 inch is is easy to figure because it is about 25 small squares, which is 2½ bold squares.
The piece shown in the photo on the left (a Gebel Kamil Iron) is about 70mm from left to right, which is about 2¾ inches, and around 60mm (about 2⅓ inches) from top to bottom.
Please note that any scale cubes, measuring grids, stands, or photographic props shown in listing images are used for display and size reference purposes only and are not included unless specifically stated.
Items are supplied in the packaging shown in the photographs where applicable. Where packaging is not shown, specimens will be carefully packaged to ensure safe transit.
