Cook 001 - H5 Ordinary Chondrite
Cook 001 is an H5 Ordinary Chondrite from South Australia, found in the Nullarbor region near Cook. It is a recognised Australian meteorite with a recorded mass of around 5.2 kg. As an H Chondrite, Cook 001 contains relatively high iron compared with L and LL Chondrites, while its type 5 classification indicates significant thermal metamorphism on its parent asteroid. The Meteoritical Bulletin records Cook 001 as an approved meteorite from South Australia.
Cook 001 specimens typically show the compact texture of an H5 Ordinary Chondrite, with subdued chondrules, scattered metal grains, and a grey to brown stony matrix. The type 5 classification means the meteorite has been thermally altered enough for many original Chondritic features to become less distinct, while still preserving recognisable Chondrite structure. Natural pieces may show weathered exterior surfaces from terrestrial exposure, while cut fragments reveal the internal texture more clearly.
Studying Cook 001 provides insight into the H Chondrite parent body, thermal metamorphism, and the preservation of Ordinary Chondrites in the Australian desert environment. For collectors, it offers a recognised South Australian meteorite with official classification, Nullarbor provenance, and classic H5 characteristics. Each specimen represents ancient asteroid material formed over 4.5 billion years ago, preserved as part of Australia’s rich meteorite record.
