Cranfield - H3-5 Ordinary Chondrite
Cranfield is a witnessed H3-5 Ordinary Chondrite fall from Mississippi, USA, which occurred on 27 April 2022. A bright daytime fireball was reported by eyewitnesses across Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Alabama, accompanied by sonic booms, with Doppler radar data helping to identify the fall area east of Natchez. As a witnessed and radar-recorded fall, Cranfield has strong modern provenance and is one of only a small number of approved meteorites from Mississippi.
Cranfield is classified as an H3-5 Ordinary Chondrite, meaning it contains relatively high iron compared with L and LL Chondrites, while also preserving a range of petrologic types within the same meteorite. The type 3 material retains more primitive Chondritic features, while the type 4 and 5 components show increasing thermal metamorphism on the parent asteroid. Specimens may display visible chondrules, metal grains, fusion crust, and brecciated textures, making it especially interesting for collectors who appreciate varied internal structure.
Studying Cranfield provides valuable insight into Ordinary Chondrite parent bodies, atmospheric entry, fragmentation, and the use of modern radar data to recover fresh meteorite falls. Its recent fall date, American provenance, H3-5 classification, and documented recovery history make it especially desirable for collections focused on witnessed falls, USA meteorites, or type 3 Chondrites. Each specimen represents ancient asteroid material connected to a clearly recorded event in 2022.
