Jikharra 001 - Eucrite

Jikharra 001 is a Eucrite Melt Breccia from Ajdabiya, Libya, purchased in 2022 after numerous fragments were recovered in northeastern Libya. It belongs to the HED Achondrite family, a group strongly linked to asteroid 4 Vesta, and represents basaltic crustal material that was later altered by impact processes. With a reported total known weight of at least 2.5 tonnes, Jikharra 001 is one of the largest recorded Eucrite recoveries and a significant recent addition to available Vestan meteorite material.

Jikharra 001 specimens are typically brownish fragments, some retaining small patches of fusion crust. Internally, it is an Achondritic melt breccia composed of centimetre-sized lithic clasts set within abundant recrystallised shock melt. These clasts include calcic plagioclase and fine-grained pigeonite crystals, while the melt matrix contains recrystallised pigeonite and fine-grained feldspar. No metallic iron has been detected in the published petrographic description.

Studying Jikharra 001 provides valuable insight into impact melting, crustal disruption, and breccia formation on asteroid 4 Vesta. Its large recovered mass, HED classification, and distinctive melt-breccia texture make it especially interesting for both researchers and collectors. For collectors, Jikharra 001 offers an accessible yet scientifically important Eucrite, preserving ancient Vestan crustal material shaped by volcanic activity and later high-energy impacts.
