Muonionalusta - Iron, IVA
Muonionalusta is an Iron meteorite from northern Sweden, close to the border with Finland, and is classified as Iron, IVA. Formed over 4.5 billion years ago within the metallic core of an early differentiated asteroid, Muonionalusta represents ancient iron-nickel material from the earliest stages of solar system history. After its parent body was disrupted by impacts, fragments travelled through space before eventually reaching Earth, where they were later preserved and shaped by glacial activity.
Muonionalusta is especially recognised for its fine octahedrite structure and distinctive Widmanstätten pattern when cut, polished, and etched. These interlocking metallic crystals formed during extremely slow cooling over millions of years, creating a geometric pattern that cannot be reproduced naturally on Earth. Natural specimens may show darker weathered surfaces, while prepared pieces reveal the bright metallic interior and fine crystalline structure that make this meteorite so visually distinctive.
Studying Muonionalusta provides valuable insight into the cooling and crystallisation of metallic cores within early planetary bodies. Its IVA classification, Swedish provenance, and attractive etched pattern make it one of the most recognisable Iron meteorites available to collectors. For collectors, Muonionalusta offers a strong combination of scientific significance, display appeal, and classic Iron meteorite character, with each specimen representing a preserved fragment of ancient planetary core material.
