NWA 18058 - Anomalous Eucrite

NWA 18058 is an anomalous Eucrite from Algeria, found in December 2020 close to the town of Oum El Assel in northern Algeria. As a Eucrite, it belongs to the HED Achondrite family, a group strongly linked to asteroid 4 Vesta and representing basaltic crustal material from an early differentiated body. Its anomalous classification indicates that, while it is related to Eucrites, it has features that set it apart from more typical examples of the group.

NWA 18058 specimens are described as brownish, heavily caliched rocks, reflecting their desert recovery environment. As an HED Achondrite, the meteorite lacks chondrules and instead records igneous processes, brecciation, and impact alteration on its parent body. Its Eucrite classification links it to basaltic material, while its anomalous status makes it especially interesting for collectors who focus on unusual or less typical Vestan meteorites.

Studying NWA 18058 provides valuable insight into the diversity of Eucritic material and the geological evolution of asteroid 4 Vesta. Its unusual classification, Algerian provenance, and recognised Meteoritical Bulletin status make it a distinctive addition to HED and Achondrite collections. Each specimen represents ancient basaltic asteroid material shaped by volcanic activity, impact processing, and eventual delivery to Earth.
