Pallasites - PPX

Pallasites - PPX (Pyroxene Pallasite grouplet) are an extremely rare and unusual subgroup of Stony-Iron meteorites, differing from typical Pallasites in both composition and structure. Like other Pallasites, they are thought to originate from the boundary between the core and mantle of differentiated planetary bodies, formed over 4.5 billion years ago. However, PPX specimens contain significant amounts of pyroxene in addition to olivine, indicating a more complex formation history and possibly a different parent body or geological process.

PPX Pallasites display a mixed mineralogy, with both olivine and pyroxene crystals set within an iron-nickel matrix. This gives them a more varied and sometimes contrasting appearance compared to the more uniform look of Main Group Pallasites. The crystals can range in colour from green to darker tones, depending on composition, and are often interspersed with metallic areas that may show internal structure when polished. Their texture reflects a more complex environment of crystallisation and mixing within their parent body.

Studying PPX Pallasites provides valuable insight into less common pathways of planetary differentiation and the interaction between different silicate minerals and metallic cores. Their rarity and unusual composition make them especially important for expanding our understanding of early solar system processes. For collectors, PPX Pallasites are highly sought after due to their extreme rarity and distinctive characteristics. Each specimen represents a unique and scientifically important variation of one of the most iconic meteorite types.
