Canyon Diablo is one of the most famous Iron meteorites in the world, directly associated with Meteor Crater in Arizona, USA. The meteorite is believed to have struck the region around 50,000 years ago, creating one of the best-preserved impact craters on Earth. Officially classified as an Iron, IAB-MG, Canyon Diablo represents ancient iron-nickel material from an early asteroid parent body, later fragmented during the violent impact event that formed the crater.

Specimens of Canyon Diablo are typically dense iron-nickel fragments, often showing natural sculpting, regmaglypts, weathered surfaces, or oxide patina from long terrestrial exposure. Cut and etched pieces can reveal Widmanstätten patterns, although some material was heavily shocked during the impact, altering or disrupting the internal structure. Canyon Diablo is also known for accessory minerals such as troilite, graphite, cohenite, schreibersite, and, in some cases, tiny diamonds formed under shock conditions.

For collectors, Canyon Diablo offers a rare combination of historic significance, recognised classification, and direct connection to a major impact crater. Its Arizona provenance and long-standing importance in meteorite science make it one of the classic Iron meteorites. Each specimen represents ancient asteroid metal and a documented part of one of Earth’s most iconic impact events.
