Carpathian Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass from the Carpathian Basin of Central Europe, with important source areas in the Zemplín Hills of Slovakia and the Tokaj Mountains of north-eastern Hungary. Formed by rapid cooling of silica-rich volcanic lava, it is entirely terrestrial in origin, but fits naturally alongside Tektites, Impactites, and other natural glasses. Carpathian Obsidian has also been widely studied in archaeology, as its chemical signature allows researchers to trace ancient artefacts back to specific source regions.

Specimens of Carpathian Obsidian are typically glossy black to smoky brown, sometimes showing translucency when held to strong light. Like other Obsidians, it has a smooth glassy texture and conchoidal fracture, producing sharp curved breaks and clean edges. Geological work on Slovak Carpathian Obsidian places some material in the Zemplín-Tokaj volcanic area, with ages around 12 million years for certain C1 sources.

For collectors, Carpathian Obsidian offers a distinctive European natural glass with strong geological and archaeological context. Its Central European provenance, historic use, and attractive glassy character make it appealing for natural glass collections, educational displays, and those interested in ancient raw materials. Each specimen represents volcanic activity from the Carpathian region, preserved as glass and shaped by both geology and human history.
