Geraisite is a rare Brazilian Tektite found primarily in the Minas Gerais region, representing one of the newest recognised tektite strewn fields. Formed during a high-energy meteorite impact event, terrestrial material was melted and ejected into the atmosphere, cooling rapidly into natural glass before falling back to Earth. As with other Tektites, Geraisite is not extraterrestrial in composition, but is directly linked to cosmic impact processes.

Specimens of Geraisite typically show dark brown to black tones, sometimes with smoky or subtle amber translucency depending on thickness and lighting. Surfaces may display pitting, flow lines, sculpting, and natural etching, reflecting rapid cooling and later terrestrial alteration. As a relatively new and still developing classification, individual pieces can vary in texture, shape, and appearance, which adds to their collector interest.

For collectors, Geraisite offers a scarce and emerging category within Tektites and impact-related materials. Its limited occurrence, Brazilian origin, and connection to a newly recognised strewn field make it especially appealing to those building focused tektite or impact glass collections. Each specimen represents part of a developing chapter in the study of Earth’s impact history.

Important information for all items

How the scales and gridlines work.

Each small square is 1x1mm, and each bold-lined square is 10x10mm, or 1cm² (1 square centimetre).

Imperial measurements.

1 inch is is easy to figure because it is about 25 small squares, which is 2½ bold squares.

The piece shown in the photo on the left (a Gebel Kamil Iron) is about 70mm from left to right, which is about 2¾ inches, and around 60mm (about 2⅓ inches) from top to bottom.
