Kapoeta is a historic witnessed Howardite fall that occurred on 22 April 1942 near Kapoeta, in what is now South Sudan. A single stone of just over 11 kg was recovered from the Kapoeta-Nathalani road, giving the meteorite strong provenance and a well-documented place in meteorite history. As a Howardite, Kapoeta belongs to the HED meteorite family, a group widely associated with asteroid 4 Vesta.

Specimens of Kapoeta are composed of brecciated Eucritic and Diogenitic material, representing a mixture of surface and subsurface fragments from its parent body. This regolith breccia texture reflects repeated impact processing, where material was broken, mixed, buried, and compacted over time. Kapoeta is also especially interesting because it contains evidence of additional impactor material, including Carbonaceous components, adding complexity to its formation history.

For collectors, Kapoeta offers a rare combination of witnessed fall status, HED classification, and strong historical significance. Its connection to Vesta, limited recovered mass, and distinctive brecciated structure make it especially desirable for collections focused on Achondrites, witnessed falls, or classic meteorites. Each specimen represents a documented fall and a fragment of ancient Vestan surface material.

Important information for all items

How the scales and gridlines work.

Each small square is 1x1mm, and each bold-lined square is 10x10mm, or 1cm² (1 square centimetre).

Imperial measurements.

1 inch is is easy to figure because it is about 25 small squares, which is 2½ bold squares.

The piece shown in the photo on the left (a Gebel Kamil Iron) is about 70mm from left to right, which is about 2¾ inches, and around 60mm (about 2⅓ inches) from top to bottom.
