NWA 13227 is a Martian Shergottite found in Northwest Africa in 2019 and officially published in the Meteoritical Bulletin in 2020. More specifically, it has been described as an olivine-gabbroic Shergottite, a relatively uncommon Martian lithology with a higher olivine content than many other gabbroic Shergottites. Like other Martian meteorites, it was formed through igneous processes on Mars before being ejected from the planet by a powerful impact event and eventually reaching Earth.

Specimens of NWA 13227 often show a grey to greenish crystalline interior, reflecting its Martian mineralogy. Research describes it as containing pyroxene and olivine set within a matrix that includes maskelynite, oxides, phosphates, and sulfides. This combination gives prepared slices and fragments a distinctive appearance, with a texture that records slow crystallisation within a Martian igneous environment rather than rapid surface cooling.

For collectors, NWA 13227 offers a recognised Martian meteorite with strong scientific interest and a visually distinctive character. Its olivine-gabbroic classification sets it apart from more common basaltic Shergottites, making it especially appealing for focused Mars collections. Each specimen represents genuine material from Mars, preserving part of the planet’s volcanic and intrusive geological history.

Important information for all items

How the scales and gridlines work.

Each small square is 1x1mm, and each bold-lined square is 10x10mm, or 1cm² (1 square centimetre).

Imperial measurements.

1 inch is is easy to figure because it is about 25 small squares, which is 2½ bold squares.

The piece shown in the photo on the left (a Gebel Kamil Iron) is about 70mm from left to right, which is about 2¾ inches, and around 60mm (about 2⅓ inches) from top to bottom.
