Philippinites are a distinctive variety of Tektite found across the Philippines, formed around 790,000 years ago during the large impact event that created the Australasian strewn field. This event melted terrestrial material and ejected it high into the atmosphere, where it cooled rapidly into natural glass before falling back to Earth. As part of the largest known strewn field, Philippinites provide a clear link to a major cosmic event that affected a wide region of Southeast Asia.

Philippinites are typically dark brown to black with a glossy surface and are known for their varied and often aerodynamic shapes. These can include spheres, teardrops, and dumbbell forms, along with irregular pieces shaped by molten flight. Many specimens display surface features such as grooves, pitting, and flow lines created during atmospheric passage. Their silica-rich composition and distinctive textures make them easily recognisable within the wider group of Australasian Tektites.

Philippinites remain a well-established and sought-after category within tektite collecting, valued for both their form and origin. For collectors, they offer a strong combination of recognisable shapes, clear scientific context, and consistent availability compared to rarer tektites. Each specimen reflects the effects of high-temperature melting, atmospheric shaping, and rapid cooling, making them a reliable and visually interesting addition to meteorite-related collections.

Important information for all items

How the scales and gridlines work.

Each small square is 1x1mm, and each bold-lined square is 10x10mm, or 1cm² (1 square centimetre).

Imperial measurements.

1 inch is is easy to figure because it is about 25 small squares, which is 2½ bold squares.

The piece shown in the photo on the left (a Gebel Kamil Iron) is about 70mm from left to right, which is about 2¾ inches, and around 60mm (about 2⅓ inches) from top to bottom.
