Smeïra 003 is a rare Martian Shergottite found in Tindouf, Algeria, with the find reported from 2021 and official approval published in 2024. It was reportedly found by a shepherd near Hasi Monir, around 45 km west-northwest of Oum El Assel. With a recorded mass of 174.3 g, Smeïra 003 is a very limited Martian meteorite, representing igneous material formed on Mars before being ejected from the planet by a powerful impact event.
Specimens of Smeïra 003 show a relatively fine-grained texture with dark green and dark brown ferro-magnesian silicate grains, colourless maskelynite, and numerous black shock melt veins. It is classified more specifically as an olivine-phyric Shergottite, with mineralogy including clinopyroxene, olivine, maskelynite, chromite, ilmenite, iron sulfide, and merrillite. These features reflect both its Martian volcanic origin and the intense shock processes involved in its launch from Mars.
For collectors, Smeïra 003 offers a scarce opportunity to acquire a recently approved Martian meteorite with strong scientific and visual interest. Its low total known weight, Algerian provenance, and olivine-phyric Shergottite classification make it especially appealing for focused Mars collections and rare planetary meteorite displays. Each specimen represents genuine material from Mars, preserving part of the planet’s volcanic history and its journey from the Martian surface to Earth.
How the scales and gridlines work.
Each small square is 1x1mm, and each bold-lined square is 10x10mm, or 1cm² (1 square centimetre).
Imperial measurements.
1 inch is is easy to figure because it is about 25 small squares, which is 2½ bold squares.
The piece shown in the photo on the left (a Gebel Kamil Iron) is about 70mm from left to right, which is about 2¾ inches, and around 60mm (about 2⅓ inches) from top to bottom.
Please note that any scale cubes, measuring grids, stands, or photographic props shown in listing images are used for display and size reference purposes only and are not included unless specifically stated.
Items are supplied in the packaging shown in the photographs where applicable. Where packaging is not shown, specimens will be carefully packaged to ensure safe transit.
