Muonionalusta - Iron, IVA
Muonionalusta is a classic IVA Iron meteorite from Norrbotten County in northern Sweden, first discovered in 1906 near the village of Kitkiöjärvi. It is classified as a Fine Octahedrite and represents iron-nickel material from the core of an ancient differentiated asteroid. The meteorite is associated with a large strewn field above the Arctic Circle, where later recoveries have produced many additional masses from glacial deposits. The Meteoritical Bulletin records Muonionalusta as an approved Swedish Iron meteorite.
Muonionalusta specimens are especially recognised for their fine Widmanstätten patterns, revealed when the metal is cut, polished, and etched. These interlocking crystalline structures formed during extremely slow cooling inside its parent body over millions of years. Natural pieces may show weathered exterior surfaces from long terrestrial exposure in a subarctic environment, while prepared slices display the elegant internal patterning that has made Muonionalusta popular for display, study, and jewelry use.
Studying Muonionalusta provides insight into metallic core formation, slow crystallisation, and the long terrestrial history of Iron meteorites preserved in glacial landscapes. Its IVA classification, Swedish provenance, distinctive fine Octahedrite structure, and broad recognition make it one of the most familiar and desirable Iron meteorites. For collectors, Muonionalusta offers a strong combination of visual appeal, scientific interest, and established history, with each specimen representing ancient asteroid core material preserved in metallic form.
