NWA 11273- Lunar Feldspathic Breccia
NWA 11273 is a Lunar Feldspathic Breccia meteorite, purchased in 2017 after material was recovered near Tindouf, Algeria. It represents fragmented crust from the Moon’s ancient highlands, created and reworked by repeated impact events across the lunar surface before a later impact ejected it into space. As a Feldspathic Breccia, NWA 11273 is rich in pale feldspar-bearing material and provides a direct sample of the older lunar crust beyond the areas visited by Apollo and Luna missions.
NWA 11273 specimens typically show a brecciated texture, with mineral clasts set within a finer-grained matrix. Reported minerals include anorthite, olivine, pigeonite, augite, chromite, spinel, kamacite, taenite, and troilite, with some material also containing small vesicles and minor barite. Prepared pieces can show contrasting light and dark clasts, giving the meteorite a varied and recognisably Lunar appearance.
Studying NWA 11273 provides valuable insight into the impact history, crustal composition, and surface evolution of the Lunar Highlands. For collectors, it offers a well-documented and visually interesting Lunar meteorite with strong scientific context. Each specimen represents genuine material from the Moon, shaped by billions of years of impacts and preserved as a rare planetary meteorite.
