NWA 13951 - Starry Night Lunar - Lunar Feldspathic Breccia
NWA 13951 is a Lunar Feldspathic Breccia purchased in Mauritania in 2021 and sometimes known by the collector nickname ‘Starry Night’. It consists of two similar masses with a total known weight of 4.3 kg, making it a limited and well-documented Lunar meteorite. As a Feldspathic Breccia, it represents fragmented material from the Moon’s ancient highland crust, reworked by repeated impacts before a later event ejected it into space.
NWA 13951 specimens are especially recognised for their attractive brecciated texture. Cut surfaces show numerous grey and white clasts, often bounded by darker grey melt veins, with no fusion crust reported on the original stones. This gives prepared slices and fragments a high-contrast appearance that is especially distinctive among Lunar meteorites. Its mineralogy includes feldspathic Lunar material, with reported plagioclase, olivine, melt phases, and scattered iron-nickel grains.
Studying NWA 13951 provides valuable insight into the impact history, crustal structure, and surface evolution of the Lunar Highlands. For collectors, it offers a visually striking and officially recognised Moon rock with strong display appeal. Its limited mass, Lunar Highlands connection, and distinctive ‘Starry Night’ appearance make it especially desirable within Lunar meteorite collections.
