Wolf Creek - Iron, IIIAB (Shale)

Wolf Creek Shale refers to heavily weathered Iron meteorite material from the Wolfe Creek crater region in Western Australia. The official meteorite name is ‘Wolf Creek’, classified as Iron, IIIAB, and associated with one of Australia’s most recognisable impact structures. Formed over 4.5 billion years ago within the metallic core of an early differentiated asteroid, this material was later delivered to Earth through a major impact event, leaving behind both crater evidence and weathered meteoritic material.

 

Wolf Creek Shale differs from cut, polished, or etched Iron meteorites because it has been strongly altered by long exposure to Earth’s surface conditions. Instead of bright metallic interiors and visible Widmanstätten patterns, shale pieces usually display dark brown, reddish, and oxidised textures, often with rugged surfaces and layered, iron-rich structure. This natural weathering gives the material a raw, earthy appearance while still preserving its origin as genuine extraterrestrial iron-nickel metal.
